Boundary Pushers: How to Deal
You know when your boundaries are being pushed because you feel harassed and your energy depleted.
It’s fairly natural for little humans (children) to do this. They will ask you a million times for what they want, despite hearing your broken record “no” before one of you is tired (hopefully them).
However, if you are experiencing this behavior from an adult, they either never learned boundaries and consent, or they are a toxic person (aka a manipulator, narcissist, psychopath, sociopath, etc) who doesn’t care to because they don’t care how others feel as long as THEY get what THEY want.
It’s important for humans to learn boundaries, as our subtle emotional interactions (even if with family, friends, and platonic relationships) seep into our most intimate and vulnerable sexual interactions.
Subtle actions can lead to big results. Violating consent has consequences that may be amplified in today’s world.
On the interpersonal level, the smallest overstep can tap into the deepest well of trauma for someone who has previously experienced a gross boundary violation such as physical, sexual, or emotional abuse.
The nervous system does not recognize the magnitude of the violation, only a similar danger and sends the alarm.
To the person committing the boundary overstep, who never learned respectful boundaries, the reaction can seem dramatic and inflated.
It can immediately shut down intimacy and trust.
